TxDOT seeks community input for Island bridge project

They have five options, and they want to know which route you think is best!

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — TxDOT is working on giving drivers another option when making the trip from Corpus Christi to The Island.

They have five options, and they want to know which route you think is best. It's all for a proposed project taking place on the 15-mile stretch between State Highway 286 and Park Road 22.

Project officials say the goal is to increase mobility from every day travel to emergencies, even evacuations as we have seen one traffic accident can cause a major shutdown on the JFK causeway.

Some of the possibilities being discussed include a new crossing on Laguna Madre and upgrades to existing roads.

TxDOT is looking to get community input regarding these options now before any work is ever done.

"Public comment informs the decision that TxDOT makes, that's why we have these events," spokesperson Rickey Dailey said. "This roadway is going to be for the benefit of the public we want to build something that the public will find beneficial."

"I'm glad that TxDOT is holding this," resident Randall Arnold said. "I think the community will come out and understand the options and weigh in and give their support to what makes most sense and I just appreciate the opportunity to weigh in."

For anyone with input they would like to share there will be are more meetings set to take place leading up to TxDOT's decision. Public comment is also available online.
