CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The winter break is something students look forward to every year.
It gives families an opportunity to make travel plans and enjoy an extended holiday period. Here in Corpus Christi, the exodus will begin as early as Thursday evening, so here are some things to consider.
Most individuals planning to travel this weekend will probably pack their car or truck as much as possible and hit the highway with two concerns: how much gasoline will cost and how many other people will be traveling?
Although gas prices have risen over the last few days, residents can still expect to pay just a few cents more than you did this time last year, good news for the more than $8 million people who will be sharing the road in Texas this weekend.
However, a larger concern could be related to your vehicle.
"You want to inspect your tire tread and your inflation, you want to check your fluid levels and make sure they are topped off," said Doug Shupe with AAA Texas. "If your battery is 3 years old or older, you will want to inspect that battery to make sure it has a good charge before you go out on that long road trip."
Nevertheless, if you plan to fly, there are several things you can do at home before reaching the airport to make your experience stress-free.
"Look at the TSA Guidelines," said Corpus Christi International Airport's Lacey Guzman. "That's where people are going to get tripped up the most, if they have something in their bag that they cannot bring with them or if their bag is too big or if they have too many bags, and they have to go and check one. They have all of that information there at TSA.gov."
Travelers heading to a larger airport for a connecting flight should be prepared for possible delays by carrying extra snacks and small toiletries in their carry-on bag, in case short delays extend to hours.
Finally, a reminder for those who may be planning to stay in town to enjoy the holidays. If your plans include using the RTA, keep in mind that the buses will not be running, all all RTA facilities will be closed Christmas Day.
