Coastal Bend Food Bank unveils new facility, launches diabetes initiatives

The food bank will begin its next series of diabetes education classes in January 2024.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coastal Bend Food Bank continues to showcase its large new facility.

On Thursday morning, they hosted a mobile diabetes distribution at the new building for the first time. With a new drive-thru lane and significantly more space, they distributed hundreds of food boxes to assist individuals diagnosed with diabetes.

Everyone who attended was able to leave with diabetes-friendly foods, aiding in their health and dietary needs.

"We give dry food, canned goods that are no sodium added. fruits canned in their own juice, we give them fresh produce, lean protein, skimmed milk cheese, we give them lean turkey," said community registered dietician Shelby Pena. 

For anyone wanting to become more educated on diabetes, or who are new to the diagnosis. The food bank will host diabetes classes for those seeking education on diabetes or who are newly diagnosed, with January dates to be announced soon.
