CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It's important to be mindful of our local veterans as you ring in the New Year With family and friends this weekend.
If you plan to set off fireworks, know that the sound of fireworks, or even the smell itself could lead to anxiety or even panic attacks for some vets.
If you are a veteran and know these sounds or smells could be difficult for you, now would be a good time to have a plan in place for a safe, controlled space.
Veteran's Services Officer, J.J De La Cerda, told 3News that veterans who might feel increased anxiety during the holiday should consider reaching out to a fellow veteran if they need someone to speak with.
"If that happens it's important to try and control that anxiety attack, " said De La Cerda. "Try to think of something, a family member, something that was great for you, something that'll completely take that mind from the anxiety, calm yourself."
The Nueces County Veterans Service office number is 361-888-0820.
