CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As we anticipate stricter water restrictions, protesters against the city's desalination facility rallied at Water's Edge Park.
Several members of the Coastal Action Network hoisted signs demanding the city council stop work on the desalination facility planned for the Inner Harbor in the Hillcrest neighborhood.
The protestors consist of members from various local environmental groups, including a grassroots movement focused on the greater good. Many criticize the city's plans as an unnecessary and ineffective solution to the Coastal Bend's drought concerns.
"Because it is not for the people," said The Greater Good Co-Founder Isabel Araisiza. "It is extremely expensive the facility they are projecting its going to cost about a billion dollars to actually produce. it will be extremely expensive to actual maintain. It is not a drought resistant water source."
Protestors said Wednesday that the plans for the facility can still be stopped. City officials said the desal facility could provide water to half a million customers in the Coastal Bend. Construction on a desalination plant could begin as soon as 2026.
