CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi Police Department proudly held a ceremony as The United States Honors Flag was displayed in memory of Officer Kyle Hicks and Sr. Ofc. Vicente Ortiz Jr.
Both officers died this year while in the line of duty.
Hicks was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance at a South Side Corpus Christi apartment complex on April 20. He died from his injuries April 24.
On May 21, Vicente Ortiz Jr. was hit on his motorcycle while he was working traffic control on a funeral along Kostoryz Road. Ortiz died from his injuries 10 days later, on June 1.
The flag presented during the ceremony represents the life and service to the two officers.
The Honor Network founder and president Chris Heisler said the story of the United States Honors Flag dates back to the 9/11 terror attacks. The flag travels across the world -- and has even traveled into space -- to honor American heroes.
"It's history of having honored so many men and women, who made the ultimate sacrifice so that's the real significance of the flag, it's history, and the sacrifice they made for it," Heisler said.
The flag will be on display all day Thursday for anyone who wishes to view it and honor our fallen heroes.
