CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) has voted in favor of passing a divisive proposal to raise windstorm insurance rates by 10%.
TWIA officials gathered at a meeting in Galveston to discuss and vote on the proposal, which passed by a six-to-three vote in favor of the rate hike.
The proposal is now on its way to the Texas Department of Insurance, as TWIA is required to submit a rate filing by Aug. 15 of each year. If approved by Texas Insurance Commissioner Cassie Brown, the increase will take effect in 2025.
3NEWS reached out to State Rep. Todd Hunter, who said, "This is step one. We will appeal to Texas Department of Insurance as we have done before. It’s sad that TWIA announced over 1000 [sic] emails against rate hike and only four in favor yet TWIA ignores the public again. Our fight against high insurance rates and TWIA has just begun!!!”
TWIA was created for property owners in 14 coastal counties and a part of Harris County, who cannot find wind and hail coverage through private insurers. They now carry more than 250,000 policies.
